Digital discovery: Every Noise at Once

Updated: Jan 13, 2019

Take some time today to explore the beauty called Every Noise at Once. Glenn McDonald is the data scientist you wish you had in your company. Using datasets from Spotify, he unravels the most beautiful webs of information.

Hold your bookmark tools. Open your evernote with 'inspiration'. Hover to the toolbar with your Pinterest 'pin it' button. Go to your Google keep. You'll find discovering things you've never heard of before.

This is Every Noise at Once. An interactive site where you can hear fragments of music who are linked to each other by style and behavioral pattern of listeners. You'll find the most mainstream genres up to destroy techno, norwegian gospel and dronescape (?). A fine piece of work that shows how datasets can come to life. Design might not be exceptional but feeling like a digital Indiana Jones has a certain charm to it.

The site gives you an, I dear to say, complete overview of all the musical genres imaginable. It's algorithmically generated, presented and made readable by an adjustable scatter-plot. The data is tracked an analysed by the 1932 genres found by Spotify. Roughly, the top area represents the more mechanical and eletric genres and down feels more organic. At the right side, the genres feel spikier and bouncier whilst on the left you'll find denser and atmospheric sounds.

Discover the world between the outliers and don't forget to bring your headphones along.

If you have loads of time to kill or searching for inspiration, McDonald has other projects too. About when christmas music will pop up in your country, how non-binary people listen 30% more music and what songs are most likely to be heard on your street.

Digital discovery is a series of online object trouvées, often exceptional in technology, content or design.
